Audio Mastering

A fresh set of ears!

It is vital, after you've finished your recording and it's mixed and ready to go, that it gets listened to by a fresh pair of ears. Someone who has not been involved in the process thus far who can give you an unbiased assesment of what you've done and give it that final polish so that it is 'release ready'. This is where a Mastering Engineer comes in.

Mastering audio is a process that adds the final polish to your music, or for that matter someone else's music. It is also used to bring levels of older recordings, say from 1980's vinyl releases, up to modern standards that enable the music to stand up against the more recent digital releases.

There is a certain art to this and it needs experience and a good ear to make sure it's not overdone. Often a track is made too loud and you experience distortion or it just doesn't sound like the original artist intended it to. With over 30 years experience as a sound engineer and more recently re-mastering of live concerts for commercial release, I am able to offer an audio mastering service. I have worked on material from artists as diverse as Joni Mitchel to The Who and YES and genre's from folk through rock to Jazz.

Pricing for this service is not straightforward as each artist and track is different but the basic fees are as follows:

single track - £20
Album of no more than 10 tracks - £120

(If you need a track mastered for iTunes or similar platforms then this can be done as well.)

Assessment of mixes prior to mastering:

It is often the case that a lot can be done 'in the mix' before a track is mastered. This makes mastering easier and thus cheaper and helps, most often the artist, get their mix right. Mastering can fix a fair number of problems but it shouldn't be used that way.
If you'd like an assessment of your mix I can offer this for £10 per track.

You can send me your tracks using WeTransfer - details on 'Our Services' page.
